MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)

A security mechanism that requires users to provide two or more verification factors to gain access.

Types of Authentication Factors

  • Something You Know: Passwords, PINs, security questions
  • Something You Have: Phone, hardware token, smart card
  • Something You Are: Fingerprint, face recognition, voice

Common MFA Methods

  • Authenticator apps (TOTP)
  • SMS or email codes
  • Hardware security keys (FIDO2/WebAuthn)
  • Biometric verification
  • Push notifications
